When was the last time you received a raise? Do you feel that your salary no longer reflects the value you bring to your company—or perhaps it never did?

Are you seen as a versatile worker handling a variety of tasks, yet none of them are the exciting, challenging projects you crave? Do you find yourself constantly busy with little opportunity for personal growth or consideration for advancement?

If your contributions and skills seem underappreciated and you’re ready to take the next step in your career but are unsure how, consider these tips:

1. Consider Your Options

If you’re no longer satisfied with your current role or seek new challenges, it might be time to explore a change. This could involve looking into opportunities to transfer to a different department within your organisation.

If internal options are limited, think about a broader career shift. Research and seek feedback to identify your transferable skills and what roles align with your interests and capabilities. Don’t hide your talents; make them known.

2. Salary vs. Contribution

If you’re contributing significantly more than your compensation reflects, or if your salary doesn’t align with your workload, it’s a sign you should consider a new position. Begin by negotiating your responsibilities or salary within your current role. Alternatively, explore opportunities through networking, job boards, or recruitment agencies for roles that offer better compensation and advancement.

3. Career Development Stagnation

Feeling unchallenged and unable to advance in your current role? If discussions with your supervisor about career progression have led to empty promises or no promises at all, it may be time to reassess your position. Plan your next steps and seek roles where you can continue to grow and develop.

4. Repetitive Tasks

If you’re stuck with monotonous tasks while others handle the more stimulating projects, it may indicate you’re ready for a role with greater responsibility and recognition. Don’t wait until you complete every task or project. If it’s time for a change, seek new opportunities that match your skills and potential, without letting loyalty keep you from advancing. People sometimes say that they cannot leave because they are in the middle of a project. That way, you may never have the chance to leave. No one is irreplaceable, the world will keep on turning even if you leave, and the project will be finished by someone else.

5. Long Time Since Last Raise

If it’s been over two years since your last pay increase and you feel your compensation no longer matches your contributions, it’s time to act. Propose a higher-level role or salary adjustment in your current company, or seek new opportunities where your skills and achievements will be better recognised.

Take Charge of Your Career

Don’t let your beliefs or those of others dictate your career path. Advocate for yourself and seek positions that better align with your skills and interests. When negotiating, aim higher than the average market rate - market rate doesn’t mean that’s the best you can achieve.
