Life in a pigeonhole - 12 ways to break free
Oct 09, 2024Do you feel trapped in your career? Are you burdened by praise, deemed so competent in your job that your employer hesitates to allow you to pursue new, inspiring opportunities internally? You might find yourself in a situation where your career dictates your path rather than you controlling it.
If you feel confined like a pigeon in a cage and yearn for liberation, consider the following methods:
1. Enhance your professional skills and acquire knowledge that aligns with your desired tasks. Take initiative; don't merely discuss or wait for your employer to provide training. Not all training comes with a hefty price tag – explore affordable options creatively.
2. Engage actively in tasks beyond your usual responsibilities. Avoid stepping on others' toes; refrain from meddling in their affairs but remain prepared to lend a hand.
3. Establish clear goals for yourself: contemplate where you envision yourself in two, five, or ten years. While not all goals materialize exactly as planned, failing to set objectives can render your career aspirations futile. Without a strategic plan and consistent execution, they remain mere fantasies. A dream is just a dream without a plan and a plan is just a plan without execution.
4. Identify the skills necessary to achieve your goals and work on acquiring them. Many skills essential for professional life can also be cultivated through hobbies. Don't forget to highlight them on your CV if they're relevant to your dream job. Building a sustainable career requires a lot of work.
5. Seek guidance from a mentor who has your best interests at heart. Once you've achieved your goals, pay it forward by mentoring others and aiding in their success.
6. Cultivate a positive relationship with your supervisor. Be a reliable team player; provide constructive input, complete tasks promptly, and collaborate effectively with colleagues. A supportive manager who challenges you with demanding projects is invaluable. Avoid office politics, adhere to guidelines, and demonstrate loyalty to your superiors.
7. Document your achievements on your resume.
8. Resist making impulsive career decisions driven by short-term frustration. Evaluate whether the next opportunity aligns with your long-term objectives. The younger you are, the more you should think about, not only the next step in your career but the step it can lead you thereafter.
9. Favourable recommendations propel your progress; a smart supervisor guides you toward fresh challenges and personal growth.
10. Exercise caution in selecting your workplace if options are available. During interviews, scrutinise potential employers, and trust your instincts if anything seems amiss.
11. Keep in mind that appearances can be deceiving, and the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
12. When a company hires you, it places its faith in you. Be reliable and resilient, do your very best, and prioritise the enhancement of your skills and competencies.
